  • LibreOffice Base Tutorial #2 – Creating Tables

    Base is the database manager app in the LibreOffice suite, this outstanding free desktop database front end brings all the features and tools to satisfy your needs regardless the kind of user you are. For those who are new to database creation and management, Base offers really helpful wizards for table, queries, reports and form creation so its usage is made as simple and easy as possible. In this tutorial I'm going to tell you how to create a table.

    LibreOffice installed and ready to run is mandatory to follow this tutorial, so those who still do not have it can click on the “Download” button above these lines, the InstallIQTM installation manager will take care of the setup process.

    Open LibreOffice's Start Center and select Database from its options.

    In the Database wizard select “Open an existing database file... in the Open dialog browse to the file, select it and click on Open. For instruction on how to create a new database check our previous tutorials.

    The Database interface will open, from the left panel select Table and from the middle panel select “Create Table in Design View”

    Table 1 will open, here you can define the field's name and type for each field you need to create.

    Let's say you want to create a database to keep track of your CD collection, so the first fiel could be Artist Name, click on the first cell and type “Artist Name”

    As you can see the Field Type was automatically filled and it is going to be Text which is suitable for this case. Now continue entering the field names you consider necessary to keep accurate track of your CD collection I made some examples:

    As you can see I included some fields with different type like date for Release Year and time for Total Length. To select the type just click on it and the options will unfold.

    You can also add a description for each field and you can also define its length. All you have to do now is to save by going to File → Save. You'll be asked to fill in the Table name being the default Table1 In this case I named it Albums.

    Click OK and you'll be asked to create a primary key, click yes as it is mandatory for later data entry.

    The ID field will be created on top of the table and you'll later use it to assign a number to your albums in order to make then unique thus avoiding any duplicates.

    Now you can close the table.
