  • LibreOffice Calc Tutorial #1 – Basic Functionality

For those who have never heard of it, Calc, is the spreadsheet component of LibreOffice, this fantastic free spreadsheet program offers all the tools that let you create professional spreadsheets in an intuitive and easy way, with wizards, templates and collaborative capabilities. Today I'm going to tell you about the most basic functions for you to get started in the use of Calc.

For you to be able to follow this tutorial you need to have LibreOffice installed and running in your computer. Get LibreOffice now by clicking on the button you'll find above. The InstallIQTM will take care of the setup process.

To open Calc you have to hit the LibreOffice icon and select “Spreadsheet” from the options.

First of all let's identify the main components of Calc: When you open Calc for the first time you'll find yourself with new spreasheet document containing a gird of cells, the tools organized in toolbars, the menus in the menu bar and the sheets labels.

The Cell: cells are defined by rows and columns. In the next screen capture the cell is framed in red, the column in green and the row in blue.

So, to select one cell you have to click on it and to open or edit it you have to double click on it, its location will be shown on the Name Box in the following way, “A1” where “A” corresponds to the name of the column and “1” to the name of the row. The cell's content will be shown in the Input Line.

When you select a group of cells the Name Box changes to the A1:A9 format meaning that the selection starts at A1 And ends at A9

In any given cell you can enter letters numbers and symbols (in the case of functions) but you can define with the cell's format how will that cell react to the data you type in, to access the format options you have to right click on the cell and select Format Cells...

The Format Cells dialog box is a very important tool because for example you can apply the “Date” format and all numerical data entered will be treated as date in the format you select, see some of the options in the next screen capture:

There is so much to learn about this powerful formatting tool and we'll go through them in upcoming tutorials.
