  • LibreOffice Calc Tutorial #2 – Basic Cell Formatting

Calc is the spreadsheet program in the LibreOffice free and open source office suite, this great free spreadsheet application enables you to create spreadsheets in a really easy yet professional way by offering all the tools and options that allow in an intuitive and easy way. Calc offers wizards, templates and collaborative capabilities. In this tutorial I'm going to tell you about some interesting options for cell formatting.

Having LibreOffice installed and running in your computer is a must if you want to follow this tutorial properly, you can get your free and full LibreOffice installer now by clicking on the button on top of this page. The InstallIQTM will guide you through the setup process.

Open Calc by clicking the LibreOffice icon and select “Spreadsheet” from the options you'll find in the main window.

Assuming you know how to create a new spreadsheet we'll go directly into the cell format options. First of all you have the Formatting toolbar to apply format to the entered text almost in the same way you do it in any word processor, you can apply style, font type, size, bold, italics, underlined, alignment (left, right, center) and some more specific formats like currency, percent, decimals (add or delete), cell borders, background and text color and so on.

For the next example I chose green color for the background, blue for the text, center align and underlined, I also applied a thick border to the cell.

To access the advanced formatting options you have to right click on the cell and from the context menu select Format Cells...

As you can see this is a tabbed dialog with different tabs for each formatting option. Let´s take a look at the first, “Numbers”, depending on what you have entered in the cell, here you can apply the corresponding format, in the panel of the left you can select the general category and in the right one you can find their options, lets start with something simple: Numbers, in this category you can select how are your numbers displayed in terms of decimals, how negative numbers are shown (with minus sign or in parentheses) and its possible combinations.

So once you have applied a format any number you enter there will be shown in the selected formatting. I selected minus sign for negatives and two decimals, and entering the formula “=1200-1500” shows “-300.00”

More about formatting and formula entering in upcoming tutorials, so, stay tuned!!
