  • LibreOffice Draw Tutorial #1 – Basic Functionality

Draw is a versatile and powerful free vector graphics editor that allows you to create astonishing graphics and diagrams, bringing all the necessary tools to produce technical drawings of excellence with 2D and 3D object manipulation, powerful rendering for photo-realistic effects, transparency and perspective tools and much more. In today's tutorial I'm going to tell you about Draw's most basic functions.

A good start would be to have LibreOffice ready to run in your PC, so if you don't, click on the “Download” button on top of this page and get your free and fully functional copy. The InstallIQTM installation manager will carry on the setup process.

To launch Draw for the first time you need to open LibreOffice and select “Drawing” from the main window options:

When Draw open a new blank drawing is also opened. You will identify three main areas in the interface: Red menu and tool bars, here is where you'll find most of the tools and commands. Blue the Pages panel, here you'll be able to browse among the different pages you create. And Yellow, the main work area. On the bottom of the interface there are another two bars for drawings and status.

So let's draw a few text boxes and some connectors between them: first go to the drawings toolbar and select the rectangle shape. Click on the location you want one the first vertex to be located and drag the cursor to the cross position to finish the rectangle.

It should look like this with its grip points. These points are used to stretch the shape as you like.

Now double click on the interior of the rectangle and you can start entering the text:

    Click elsewhere to finish editing.

Make some other shapes so that we can connect them.

Click on the Connector icon and select the first point and the end the connection by clicking on the second point.

Voilà!! you have created your first flow chart using Draw!!
