VLC Tutorial # 7 – How to Make VLC Your Default Media Player

VLC is an extremely solid and at the same time versatile media player which greatest virtue is that it is capable of playing almost any type of media file you may come across, this feature is supported by the fact that VLC includes its own comprehensive pack of codecs from its installation so, you don't have to do any further codecs search or plug-in installation. In this tutorial I'm going to tell you how to make this amazing piece of freeware your default media player so that you can automatically open your files with VLC by just clicking on its icon.

Of course you need to have VLC installed and running in your PC to be able to perform this adjustments. So for those of you that do not have VLC in your system, just click on the big blue “download” button from above and once you have the installer .exe just double click on it and follow the instructions. When you are running the installation, VLC will probably offer you to choose the options and among them you can select the types of files you want to associate including video and audio just unfold the tree structure and select the ones you want or just use the default settings which will set all the file types VLC supports to be played in VLC by default. If you cannot find this option while installing do not worry just keep on reading.

Now, for those of you who already have this marvelous free media player installed and running, chances are that you have another program set as default to open your video files such as .avi, .ogg, .mkv and so on, so you must be wondering how do I know if I have another program set as default player of a certain video file type? Well there are several ways but the most practical one is to open a Windows Explorer window and see which icon does these file show. Just as an example I had the .MOV video files extension set to be played by Windows Player.

So to change this setting we have to select the file you want VLC to play by default, right-click on it, and select "Properties" it will open a window like this:

From the "Opens with" option click on the "Change ... " button it will take you to this options window:

Click on the VLC media player button and then click on “OK” and now the Properties window will look like this:

You can also do and select more than one file association at a time by opening the VLC media player and going to Tools > Preferences in there go to the Interface Settings button on top of the left panel and in the File associations section click on the “Set up associations...” button it will take you to the Set Default Programs Section of the Control Panel.

Once there you can select as many file types as you want by checking the boxes.

Final Words

VLC is such an extraordinary free media player that it definitely deserves the default position to handle all your multimedia content. If you have never tried VLC media player, do not hold yourself and download it now from the download now link just below these lines. Satisfaction guaranteed!!
