VLC Media Player Tutorial #17 – How to Save Equalizer Presets

VLC Media Player is an awesome free media player, with this lightweight piece of freeware you'll be able to play almost any audio or video format you may stumble upon in all major platforms like Linux (Debian GNU/Linux, Ubuntu, openSUSE Mandriva Linux, Fedora, etc,), Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Android / PocketPC / WinCE handhelds and many other operating systems. That being said, I'm going to show you how to save your equalizer presets in order not to have to adjust them every time you play a new song.

Following this tutorial is much easier if you have VLC Media Player installed on your computer. If you don't have it yet, don't worry, getting it is easy as clicking on the “Download” button above, because once you have it in your designated folder, the InstallIQTM installation manager will take care of the setup process.

I'll assume you have already launched VLC Media Player and opened an audio file or the Playlist manager.

Regardless if you are playing some audio or not to adjust the equalizer you have to go to Tools → Preferences... and on the bottom of the left panel at "Show settings" check "All". It should look like this:

So, in this same panel unfold “Audio” (clicking on the small triangle at its left or by double-clicking on it) select “Filters” and choose “Equalizer with 10 bands” from the options on the right panel.

Now unfold “Filters” and choose “Equalizer”. Here you can choose some preset from the list or below in the in the “Bands gain” box you can enter the value for each band in this manner: -0.30, 0, 0.60, 1.90, 3.00, 3.10, 1.60, 3.10, 7.50, 8.50 until you complete the 10 bands. In the “Global gain” box enter 10.00 or less. Finally click “Save” at the bottom right. Doing this will save your configuration to the “Flat” preset.

If you want to see it graphically you can go to “Tools” → “Effects and Filters” and this dialog will popup:

Here you can further modify these settings and you can see all other presets as well.
