VLC Media Player Tutorial #9 – How to Load and Visualize Subtitles

VLC Media Player is an extraordinary free media player with and extensive codec pack that allows you to playback, convert and stream almost any kind of multimedia files. Its simple interface can also be customized with skins and it also comes with support for subtitles in a wide variety of types, so today I'm going to tell you how to load subtitles for your favorite movies and videos.

Of course you have to have VLC Media Player running on your PC to follow this tutorial, if you don't kindly go to the top of this page and click on the “Download” button, get the installer in your computer (i.e. your desktop or downloads folder) and launch it, the InstallIQTM installation manager will take care of the rest.

There are two ways to visualize the subtitles while playing a video file in VLC Media Player. The first and most simple is to place the subtitle file in the same folder where the video file is located and rename it with its exact name (but keeping the extension). It should look like this.

But in the case you don't want to change the name of the subtitle file you can first open the video file (going to Media > Open File...), and once it loaded, pause it and go to Video > Subtitles Tracks > Open File... and browse to the subtitle file in your folders.

After that resume the playback and the subtitles will be displayed.

If there is more than one subtitle track, for example, in the case of a DVD, going to Video > Subtitles Tracks will show the different tracks and you can alternatively swap between them.

As you can see in the screen capture above you can also disable the subtitles from this same menu.
