VLC Media Player Tutorial #16 – How to Play a Podcast

VLC Media Player is an outstanding piece of freeware, not only it is a lightweight media player capable of playing almost any audio or video format you may come across but also a multiplatform application in the real sense of the word, being able to run on Linux (Debian GNU/Linux, Ubuntu, openSUSE Mandriva Linux, Fedora, etc,), Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Android / PocketPC / WinCE handhelds and many other operating systems. Besides, VLC Media Player excels as a streaming server and video/audio transcoder. Today I'm going to tell you how to play audio and video podcast in VLC Media Player.

Before we plunge into the tutorial, let me tell you that the only thing you need to follow it is as basic as having VLC Media Player installed on your computer. Those who don't have it yet can click on the “Download” button above, the InstallIQTM installation manager will guide you through the setup.

The first thing you have to do to play a podcast is to launch VLC Media Player and open the Playlist manager, so, go to View → Playlist .

The Playlist will show up either docked or as a separated window depending on your choice in the View menu, if you want it to be docked check the “Docked Playlist” option, uncheck it to have it as an independent window. I will use the docked way.

So, unfold the Internet list under Media Browser and hover your mouse over the Podcast option a “+” sign will show up.

Click on it and the Subscribe dialog will show up.

Here you can type or paste the podcast address you want to subscribe to. Once you are done click OK and the podcast will appear on the list.

You can select the podcast and click the Play button to reproduce it.

You will also find that there are a lot of interesting pre-loaded podcasts in the playlist. They are arranged by categories.

Click on one of them on the right panel and you'll find that under each category there are a lot of video podcasts you can enjoy thanks to VLC Media Player.
