VLC Tutorial #3 - Remote Control Using iPhone

As you know VLC Media Player is an extraordinary free multimedia player that can play all the media formats you can think of, so it is certainly a good idea to adopt it as your default media player and if you are tech savvy enough to connect your desktop-laptop to your big-screen TV, chances are that once you sank back on your sofa you would never want to stand up again so you would probably like to have some way to remote control your VLC. Fortunately, there are a bunch of ways to remote control VLC from other devices like PDA's, smartphones and other mobile devices. Today I'm going to tell you how to remote control VLC using your iPhone and a free app called VLC Remote Free.

To begin with, here is a list of things you need to setup iPhone as your remote control for VLC.

1. iPhone running iOS 3.1.2 or later (required)
2. PC/Laptop running Windows XP/Vista/7 (required)
3. WiFi network to connect 1&2 (required)
4. Big-Screen TV and comfy sofa (optional but recommended)

If you haven't already done, this is a good moment to download VLC for free by clicking on the big blue button on top of this page. No cost, no registration, just have fun!
Access iTunes Store either from your iPhone or from iTunes on your PC and get VLC Remote Free app. If you get it from your PC then synchronize it to your iPhone.

Now download VLC Setup Helper for Windows from here and install it on your PC/Laptop. It will configure your default system firewall. However, on other firewall applications, you'll have to check that VLC is correctly enabled to communicate through it.

Once you are done go back to your iPhone and you should be able to verify the display of your computer in the VLC Remotes page under ''Found Computers''.

With VLC running on your PC/Laptop, there should be a Traffic cone next to the computer name.

Tap on the computer and you can start remote controlling your VLC playback.

As you can see in the previous screenshot, you can control the full-screen view mode from the button on the top right, the playback position can be adjusted with the ruler that is right below that, in the middle panel you'll see the media played and the stop and play button are below that, finally there is a ruler for the volume.

So, grab a snack, a cold beverage, hunker down in your comfy sofa and watch your favorite movies without moving an inch.

Note: VLC Remote Free has basic functionality and also works on iPod and iPad provided they are running iOS 3.2.1 or later.
