What you are about to learn in today's tutorial is how to use VLC's capability to capture video and audio from your webcam and system microphone.
It is essential that you have VLC Media Player ready to run in your computer, if you don't just click the “Download” button above to download the free VLC installer, once you have it in your folders launch it. The InstallIQTM installation manager will take care the setup process.
Let's get started, first of all run VLC Media Player and from its Media menu select the Open Capture Device... option.
This will take you to the Open Media dialog. Note that here you can select not only the video device (Webcam, Integrated Webcam etc) but also the audio device (microphone, linein, etc).
So, first you have to select the video device, unfold the menu and click on the device you want to use, for this example I'm going to use the Integrated Webcam.
Next you can configure the audio, the procedure is the same.
If you want you can also click on the Configure button to access the properties dialog.
Here you can adjust several parameters like Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation, you can play with them and see what nice effects you can achieve for your videos. On the Camera Control tab you'll fine some other settings like Zoom, Focus and so on but they will only be available if your device supports them, as you can see that's not my case.
So the next thing to do is click the OK button when you are done and go back to the Open Media dialog, there you'll unfold the Play button and select the Convert option.
This will open the Convert dialog where you can select the Destination file, click on the Browse button to select video file location, name and format.
For this example I chose the .mp4 format. Once you are ready just click Save and back in the Convert dialog you can also make son fine adjustments to this aspect by clicking on the Profile button. Click Star when you want to start recording. To end it click on the Stop button.
