VirtualDub Tutorial #1 – How to Compress an .AVI Video File

VirtualDub is a versatile free video capture and processing program which will help you to perform several task like video filtering, re-compression, resizing, cropping and many more. Though this free video utility is mainly intended for advanced users, there are a bunch of tasks like conversion and resizing that most users will find really useful and easy to carry out. In this first tutorial I'm going to guide you through the step for compressing a large .AVI video file.

Of course you need to have VirtualDud installed in your computer to be able to follow this tutorial, so, go to the big blue “Download” button up there and click on it. The InstallIQ installation manager will take care of the setup process.

Once you are done with the installation, the first thing to do is to open the .AVI video file, to do so go to File → Open video file... or press Ctrl+O in your keyboard, it will take you to this explorer like dialog.

Browse to the file and select it by clicking on it and press “Open”. It will appear in the main window, one frame for the input and one for the output. If you cannot see both right click on any of them and from the Zoom panel of the popping window select the zoom that best fits your screen.

Now, if your video file has audio, you need to make sure it will get compressed along with the video, go to Audio → Full processing mode.

Next you can also go to Compression in the same menu (Audio) and select the compressing method, there are a lot of options, but in my humble opinion the best is MPEG Layer-3.

After that you have to go to the Video menu and select Compression, form this list the option I recommend is Xvid MPEG-4 Codec but if it does no appear in your list you must download it from here, install it and restart VirtualDub.

Now you are ready to start the process, go to File → Save as AVI... and an explorer like dialog will open where you can choose the output folder and the file name.

Click on the Save button, and the compression will start.

As you can see in the Status window, the Projected file size is of about a quarter from the original size (250 MB from 1GB)
