VirtualDub Tutorial #2 – How to Crop a Video

As you know, VirtualDub is an extremely fast and versatile free video capture and processing application that is useful when it comes to video filtering, re-compression, resizing, cropping and much more and that is specifically what this tutorial is about, how to crop specific areas of a video.

The only prerequisite to follow this tutorial is to have VirtualDub installed in you computer, if you don't, just go to the “Download” button above and get the InstallIQ installation manager, it will take care of the installation process once you have it in your folders.

You must be wandering what is video cropping useful for? Well you can use it to delete some areas you don't want of the video. You can also center the video to its main object or eliminate unwanted graphics on its border.

So the first step is to open the video with VirtualDub, just go to File ? Open video file... or press Ctrl+O in your keyboard either way you get an explorer-like dialog like this:

There is a second way to open videos and it is by dragging and dropping the video from a Windows Explorer window to the program main window.

Note: VirtualDub is capable of opening most video formats including .avi and .mpg but you have to get non compatible formats like .mov, .mp4, and .wmv. Converted with a program that can convert video formats.

The second step is to add a video filter, to do so go to Video ? Filters... and in the dialog that opens click on the Add... button. You'll see a list of filters, add the brightness/contrast filter and leave all parameters in their defaults: brightness at normal and contrast at 100%.

Click OK and you'll go back to the filters menu, now the cropping button is activated and can be selected. Click on it and you'll go to the cropping window:

In this window you'll do the cropping by the four offsets: X1 (video's left side from your point of view), X2 (video's right side), Y1 (top side), Y2 (bottom side). In order to do the cropping just enter or increase the value of the offsets, this will erase a portion of the video from the directions of the offsets. A the preview of the cropped video is shown in the same window.

So, you can play with those four parameters untill you are satisfied, once you are done you can save the video. Assuming you do not want to compress the video (which you can do by applying our previous tutorial) then go to File ? Save as AVI... (or enter in your keyboard F7). Enter a name for your video, choose the location and click on the Save button.

As you can see in the output frame (right frame) the video is shown in the new cropped size.
