Today I'm going to tell you how to make the best of this free fully featured free file archiver by compressing files in the 7z format.

In order to properly follow this tutorial, you need 7-Zip installed and running in your computer, if you don't have it yet, hit the “Download” button on top of this page, run the installer once you have downloaded it and follow the instructions, InstallIQ™ will take care of the rest.

The first step you have to take is to select the files you are going to compress, to do so you have to ways: either you open the 7-Zip file manager and browse to the folder where such files are stored in as you can see in the next screen capture:

Or you can directly open the Windows Explorer and browse to them, select them and right-click on them, as you can see the right-click menu shows a series of options regarding the 7-Zip compression options.

So, let's focus on the first option because from now on the procedure is mostly the same. Once you have selected the files/folders you want to compress, you can click on the “Add” button, this will open the Add to Archive window (which is the same you get to by clicking going to 7-Zip > Add to archive... on the right-click menu in windows Explorer), which looks like this:

In this window you will select the following parameters to make sure you get the best compression ratio:

Archive: in this field you can enter the name you want for the file and click on the “...” button to browse and select the location.
Archive format: 7z
Compression level: Ultra
Compression method: LZMA

And the rest of the options can be left in their factory defaults.

There is an interesting option to split the compressed files to volumes, the options are floppy, CD (in 2 variants) or DVD size.

This can be useful if what you are compressing is really large and you will need to transfer it to one of these devices.

Under the Encryption section you can set a password and encryption method if you want to rest assured that nobody will be able to open and view the content of these archives except from those you gave the password to.

So, once you are done with all this you only have to click on OK and a progress dialogue will appear.

And voilà! Your files are compressed and placed in the folder you selected.
